SAILROCKET
 50 KNOTS UNDER SAIL

flying the leeward hull in light winds

SAILROCKET IS A REVOLUTIONARY BRITISH DESIGN  AIMED AT ESTABLISHING  A NEW WORLD SPEED SAILING RECORD. THE EXISTING RECORD, SET BY AUSTRALIAN BOAT  YELLOW PAGES ENDEAVOUR IN 1993,  STANDS AT 46.58 KNOTS.

2002 -  STAGE  2  - THE REAL THING

THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AND VALIDATED OVER A 2 YEAR  PERIOD  WITH THE HELP OF  A ONE FIFTH SCALE RADIO CONTROL MODEL. THE SAILROCKET TEAM ARE NOW READY TO MOVE AHEAD AND ARE  SEEKING SPONSORSHIP TO SUPPORT THE FULL SCALE BUILD AND TRIAL PROGRAM

SAILROCKET's  unique counterfoil  configuration completely by-passes the stability limits encountered in  monohulls, multihulls and indeed most speed record attempt craft to date.

By inclining and separating the keel and sail elements, the overturning effect of the sail is almost completely eliminated. SAILROCKET actually flies the Leeward hull at speed!

Equally importantly, the weight carried on the water remains constant irrespective of sail loading thus eliminating the possibility of uncontrolled take off.

KEY POINTS ABOUT THE  DESIGN

  • Single tack

  • Single pilot – all up weight 250kg- 70% of YELLOW PAGES ENDEAVOUR
  • Variable geometry for coarse and fine tuning of rig position/angle
  • Modular construction – all parts upgradeable
  • Cross beam acts as very efficient ‘wing in ground effect’ lifting lee float clear of water
  • Main hydrofoil emerges through planing surface which acts as an effective end plate (as on windsurfers)
  • Long ‘wheel base’ between fore and aft planing surfaces to  cope with small pitching loads
  • Low windage hull/cross beams
  • Length overall 11.0m
  • Beam overall 8.5m
  • Sail Area 21.8m^2

MALCOLM BARNSLEY- Designer and project technical leader
Malcolm is a  qualified naval architect who has been researching  speed sailing and novel sailing concepts for over 20 years. Since 1993 he has worked  for  AEROLAMINATES LTD , the UK manufacturer of wood/epoxy wind turbine blades, as a designer and test engineer. He has designed,  built and sailed 5 high performance sailing boats.

Having the right concept is the easy bit. The SAILROCKET project will use only proven top level professionals in the design, build and sailing areas to ensure the objectives of the project are achieved.

PAUL LARSEN - Pilot and promotions
Paul has always been drawn to 'fast rides'. Starting on Hobie cats back in the mid eighties he was introduced to speed sailing French style when he joined Bruno Peyron and Skip Novak aboard 'EXPLORER' for the successful attempt on the Trans Pacific record in 1998. From there the only way was forward and faster so he left Australia for Europe where he sailed on 60 foot trimarans before joining Pete Goss on the TEAM PHILIPS project. Due to events he jumped aboard TEAM LEGATO and completed 'THE RACE' early in 2001. From there it was onto TEAM ADVENTURE for a Trans Atlantic record attempt. Having just won the 50 foot class of the TRANSAT JACQUE VABRE race, he has joined Malcolm at SAILROCKET to fulfil his ultimate dream..... to be the FASTEST!

SAILROCKET will be the perfect vehicle for demonstrating the latest composite and sail technology which will prove fundamental in the success of the project. Absolute efficiency is what this record is all about.

THE RECORD CONSISTS OF A 500 METER COURSE.... AT 50 KNOTS THAT SHOULD TAKE LESS THAN TWENTY SECONDS! A SORT OF CONTROLLED EXPLOSION JUST METERS OFF THE BEACH.....WILD!!   IMAGINE THAT...
